China – Day 7: Transfers and Flights and Transfers

An early start to the day..up and ready for brekky by 530…for a 7am departure from the Hotel. Everyone was at reception with their bags packed at 7am this morning … lots of distance to cover today.
One hour bus ride to the airport
Two hour plane ride from Xian to Wuhan
Five hour bus ride to Yichang to begin our 3 night Yang Tze River Cruise … Glad there’s a couple of stops en route.

Whilst reading the newspaper on the plane we found out about the lives lost and disruptions to the trains at Xian …we considered ourselves very lucky we were not affected by the heavy rains flooding and mudslides.

We were met by our guide Shirley (Temple) at the airport … she’s pleasant and easy to understand. Five hours and a massive storm enroute later we arrived at a restaurant in Yichang for dinner…more rice. .more duck…more beer. ..what a life!

Yichang looked so beautiful by the river … houses are big and villa like a 4km park ran along the river with beautiful trees parks etc but when we turned off the main road the contrast was evident with narrow slum like areas lined the route to the wharf.

Taking another narrow road…like driving through a Forest we finally made it to the wharf where our boat was berthed.

After the prolonged ship introduction, a long awaited shower and a cocktail we called it a night.

Sorry but she who had bestowed on her the gift of eloquence after kissing the Blarney Stone has drifted into the land of dreams …

So our last full day of our adventure … we again started our day with a picnic breakfast under the Eiffel Tower … then an hours walk to “The Catacombs” where we were confronted with one of the scariest things we had encountered on our adventure … a freakin long queue …

20131009-115921.jpg

So we passed an hour hoping the line would decrease … alas this was not the case … we joined the queue to the Catacombs … about an hour and twenty later we were in … worth the wait ? Maybe not however me not having seen anything like this ever before I did greatly appreciate Faiza’s persistence in staying in line !

We then trained it back home for a short break before our night dinner cruise … we met an Aussie couple: Tony and Vicki and had a great night with great food and great company while cruising down The River Seine …

Gooood morning AmsterDAM!!

20131001-214530.jpg

Went to bed after midnight last night. Stayed up listening and singing along with the ship entertainment for the night (great singer James ?)

After a not so smooth nights sleep on the ship and the noises that came from what sounded like an injured “sea monster” from above Steven’s bunk…(which lead to a sleepless night) we woke up awaiting our arrival at Amsterdam.

20131001-214542.jpg

It was bizarre to see kilometres worth of wind generators out in the middle of the ocean about an hour out to sea from the boat. There were literally millions. (Ok maybe thousand or so of them).

Well I must say we weren’t that impressed with the cruise itself. The staff were courteous but not friendly and sometimes quite abrupt… Food and drinks were very expensive.

Amsterdam Ahhh what an experience so far and we’ve only just gotten off the boat!

20131001-214611.jpg

After a long bus ride from ferry terminal to central Amsterdam we found it quite difficult to know where what and how we should go to our hotel. Amsterdam is an “organised” mess and mesh of narrow streets, canals, tram lines, bike lanes bridges and overpasses … How people get around here is beyond me…. So after stopping in a cafe to catch our breath and gather our information and of course to have a coffee (people here don’t believe in customer service and can be quite abrupt in their manner) my trusty navigator (SRS45) got us on the number 1 tram to our hotel…

A good 15 mins away from city centre.. Too early to check in, we left our luggage at the hotel and with my SRS 45 sat nav… We set off on foot to explore Amsterdam.

It’s quite nice despite the chaos.. So was our little picnic by the canal.

Next time we come here we’re definitely staying in a canal/ river boat!

A leisurely 1 hr canal tour was informative and interesting.
