Camino Day 24: Amenal to Santiago de Compostela

Up early and out starting our last days hike to Santiago by torchlight at 8 am.

Heavy fog and rain most of our days hike … our final 15 km taking us around 4 hours.

Soaked to the skin … but Faiza pushed on like a trooper and I grumbled and muttered under my breath whilst trying my best to keep up …

But we finally made it !

Compostelas in our hands …

Camino Day 23: Salceda to Amenal

Faiza forgot to pray for good weather today so it drizzled all the way from Salceda to Amenal.  We were reluctant to get out of bed but we knew we have only 2 days left before we reach Santiago. A short day for us today as our legs were still sore from yesterday…you’d think we’d be used to all this walking by now but we have been putting constant strain on our legs and feet without respite.

The walk today was similar to yesterday’s with paths leading us into and out of forests and small villages. At least there were no hills or mountains to climb today.

A short 13 km later we were in Amenal where we decided to call it a day. A very small town with only 1 hotel (a very nice hotel).

We couldn’t go and explore the town as it has been raining all day. So after a nice warm shower and with the laundry done (Steve couldnt stand another day of wearing the same clothes lol) we enjoyed a drink and raciones of calamari at the bar…then a nap before dinner.

Camino Day 22: Melide to Salceda

A red sky morning to start the day …

We set the alarm to getaway early this morning (after one of the worst nights sleeps for our whole adventure) and were out on the Camino once again before the sun was up at 7.30 am so we could make the most of the weather as the following two days have rain predicted (we have been extremely fortunate to have had almost no rain fall during our walking hours for our entire Camino) … we pushed hard today and made it to Salceda … but at the expense of Faiza’s feet which she can now barely walk on …
Today we walked up into forests and through corn fields and down into villages and hamlets. A pretty walk, although hard climbing at some stages.
Another private room at Pension Casquairo II tonite…hopefully it will be a better nites sleep for us!

We now have less than 30 km to Santiago, which some would tackle in one long day but we will split in two …

Our Compostela is so close we can almost feel it …

Camino Day 21: Palas de Rei to Melide

We decided to make this a short day to give our (bruised) feet a break. with more undulating terrain, this 16 km hike took us through a number of hamlets with the typical odour and dodging the dung that we have become accustomed to, especially since entering the Lugo and A Coruña regions. The hike was predominantly on natural paths going through forests. We met and spoke with more pilgrims on our stops and heard their many different reasons for doing the Camino.
Today we stayed in Albergue  Pereiro and managed to get a room with 1 bunk bed in it…how lucky are we???
apparently we are quite lucky, as not only did we have great weather for our walk today (and indeed the previous days) but it started to drizzle after we got to our accommodation.

52 kms to go to Santiago de Compostela !
