Lecco to Varenna and Bellagio

Our sleep last night wasn’t good..very noisy here at Casa Fortuna, but after a nice brekky prepared by Teziano we went off to catch a train to Varenna. The weather wasn’t on our side and neither were the trains from Lecco. Apparently the boats to other areas in Lake Como run from 1st June from Lecco…so a train it had to be!

As usual there was no easy way to find out which platform etc but we’ve been lucky to get info from other travellers..so we waited on platform 3 for 1.5 hrs till the 11am train came….don’t know what happened to the 10am one…maybe coz there was maintenance on the rail track??

Maintenance on train track

Whipper snipper the grass on the track

No info on the boards

….better late than never and the weather was improving…

20 minutes later and we were at Varenna…beautiful.

Varenna station platform

Crossing the narrow platforms across the tracks to exit

Lunch at restaurant in the local Piazza. Great service and nice food.

After exploring the alleys of Varenna we hopped on a ferry to Bellagio..Another beautiful place

On the way back to Lecco from Bellagio by bus, the views were spectacular. The photos don’t do it justice

We then tried to find this restaurant in Lecco that was recommended..long walk later we come to Giovinini

Friendly staff

Tasty food

Hardly anything on the plate and overpriced. What happened to good old traditional Italian food and servings?? We were in shock that we didn’t even take a photo to prove it …but the beer was nice!!

All in all a long, beautiful day.. Very grateful that the weather improved and we were able to have this adventure.

China – Day 7: Transfers and Flights and Transfers

An early start to the day..up and ready for brekky by 530…for a 7am departure from the Hotel. Everyone was at reception with their bags packed at 7am this morning … lots of distance to cover today.
One hour bus ride to the airport
Two hour plane ride from Xian to Wuhan
Five hour bus ride to Yichang to begin our 3 night Yang Tze River Cruise … Glad there’s a couple of stops en route.

Whilst reading the newspaper on the plane we found out about the lives lost and disruptions to the trains at Xian …we considered ourselves very lucky we were not affected by the heavy rains flooding and mudslides.

We were met by our guide Shirley (Temple) at the airport … she’s pleasant and easy to understand. Five hours and a massive storm enroute later we arrived at a restaurant in Yichang for dinner…more rice. .more duck…more beer. ..what a life!

Yichang looked so beautiful by the river … houses are big and villa like a 4km park ran along the river with beautiful trees parks etc but when we turned off the main road the contrast was evident with narrow slum like areas lined the route to the wharf.

Taking another narrow road…like driving through a Forest we finally made it to the wharf where our boat was berthed.

After the prolonged ship introduction, a long awaited shower and a cocktail we called it a night.

Camino Day 9: Belorado to Burgos

Woken up by the normal morning rabble of pilgrims getting ready around 5.30am (and the light in the room being turned on). We took our time this morning knowing we were going to catch the bus to Burgos (a tourist/rest day today in Burgos and another tomorrow in Leon to see how the feet will recover before attempting some more camino).

As we went to leave the albergue we discovered it was our first rainy morning for our Camino … we were thankful we weren’t walking today … As we approached the bus stop it appeared there were almost a dozen other pilgrims who also decided the bus was the right choice for the day …

An hour later after passing many soggy strong willed pilgrims trudging through the mud on their journey, we arrived in Burgos and found ourselves a hotel for the night to have a break from the albergues.

A nice pilgrim meal later shared with yet more new Camino friends Roy and Sue from NZ, followed by coffee and chocolate. We had a siesta before heading to the cathedral to find we had missed our chance to tour the inside …

The cathedral itself was huge and ornate from the outside and we took our time viewing and photographing it from every angle before a light snack of mussels and calamari for dinner … then calling it a night.
